Monday Morning Memo (on Sunday!) - “ME-DAY”? I Don’t Think So

Don’t freak out…it’s not Monday yet!  Yes, this is my Monday Morning Memo…but I felt like it might be better to send it a day early this time.  Why?  Because hopefully what God has laid on my heart to share…will help us prepare for tomorrow…which as I’m sure you know is Christmas Day.  So…here goes…

“It’s not about you.”  If that statement sounds familiar, it probably means you have read Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life.  It is the very first sentence in chapter 1.  He goes on to say, “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness.  It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions.  If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God.  You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.”

Warren’s words have been coming to mind often this past week as I’ve been trying to prepare my heart and mind for Christmas.  Unfortunately, of all the holidays that we celebrate, I’m guessing that Christmas is probably one of the hardest for many to realize that it’s not about us.  All we have to do is turn on the television, the radio, open up one of the zillions of ads which we are bombarded with and we are told over and over again what WE need.  We need to buy this…we must have that…we need to make sure and include this on our Christmas list.  We won’t be happy, and our life just won’t be complete unless the gifts under the tree are exactly what we want.

I can’t believe this is what God had in mind when He sent his Son into the world on that night so long ago.  I can’t imagine that His plan was to have his Son born, so that once a year I can be selfish and hope I am showered with gifts.  If that was His desire, He wouldn’t have had to have a baby born.  He could have just started a tradition of a day that we celebrate called, “ME-DAY”.

What would it be like if, several weeks before my birthday, my family would come to me and give me lists of what they want me to buy for them to celebrate the day I was born?   What if when my day arrives, they all run in and say, “What did you get me?  Where are my gifts?  What are we going to do to celebrate me?”  I’m guessing I might be a little hurt.  I’m speculating I might feel somewhat neglected…somewhat disappointed in those whom I thought loved me.

I wonder then how Jesus feels when we hand Him our lists of what we want.  When we hound him over and over again, telling Him what He needs to do for us and how He needs to bless us.  I wonder if He feels a little hurt.  I wonder if He feels a little neglected…maybe disappointed in us for saying that He means the world to us but showing something different with our actions.

I’ve come to the realization that Christmas is not about me.  Unfortunately, it’s not about you either.  It is all about Him.  The precious, tiny baby Jesus entered this world because of His great love for us.  He entered this world so that He would grow up to become a very important part of history.  His story is one of truth, hope and love for you and for me.  His life entered this world so that one day He would pay the price for the things we have done wrong.  His life brought us salvation and He was willing to sacrifice everything He had for you and for me.

Doesn’t it make sense then that Christmas, His birthday, should be all about Him?  I happen to think it does.

As we celebrate Jesus’ birthday tomorrow, let’s make a point to ask Him what He wants from us.  Let’s do everything we can to show Him, not just with our words but also with our actions, just how much we love Him.  He should be the guest of honor of our celebration so let’s make sure He knows that it IS all about Him!

O come let us adore Him

O come let us adore Him

O come let us adore Him

Christ the Lord!

For He alone is worthy

For He alone is worthy

For He alone is worthy

Christ the Lord!

Monday Morning Memo: Are You Seen?

Do you ever wonder if God sees you?  Or even hears you?  If I am honest, I have to admit that I do wonder sometimes.  I mean, it’s not like we can see Him in physical form…or touch Him…or audibly hear Him speak to us.  So, it’s not surprising that we have times when we wonder.

Is that a bad thing?  Do I think that God shakes His head and is disappointed in us when we wonder?  I don’t think so.  God loves us immeasurably and He understands every emotion…every desire…every concern we have.  I believe it is at those times when He wants to show us that He does see us and hear us…even in the little things of life.

You may be wondering what in the world led me to write about this today.  Well, it stems from something that happened to me last week.  Let me explain.  Christmas looks a little different at my house this year.  I’m not a huge decorator for any season or holiday…but I usually put up our tree and a variety of decorations at Christmas.  This year though has been different because I decided it just wasn’t wise for me to do it.  Since I am supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible, setting everything up and then having to put it away again…wasn’t something that made sense.

Now, I’ve been ok with this decision…until last Wednesday.  We were having our small group from church over for dinner and not having a festive looking home bothered me.  I asked Dan that afternoon to bring in a small ceramic tree which was his mother’s…so we would at least have something with lights.  But as I set the table…all I could think about was the fact that the table was bare.  I wished I would have at least unpacked something to put down the center…but it was too late at that point and I knew it really wasn’t a necessity.

Dinner was set for 6 pm, but one of the couples texted to say they were running ahead of schedule and would arrive around 5:30 pm…which was just fine with us!  We love our small group and enjoy spending as much time with them as possible.  As they entered our home, they carried with them the beautiful Christmas decoration in the picture I am sharing in this post.  And not just one of them…but four of them! Kathy had lovingly made these as a gift to give each couple.

At that moment…a lightbulb went on in my head and my face lit up.  I asked Kathy if it was ok if I put her creations down the middle of our table as decoration.  I told her how much it had bothered me to not have anything there and her gifts were just perfect!  Of course she graciously agreed with my idea and suddenly everything looked much more Christmas-y!

Was this a coincidence?  I don’t think so.  First of all, Quinn and Kathy were running ahead of schedule, so they arrived before everyone else.  This allowed us to get the table decorated before anyone else appeared.  Secondly, of all the things that she could have brought…she walked in with handmade decorations which fit my table perfectly.

This event may not seem too notorious to you…but to me it was just what I needed.  It was a reminder to me from God that He sees me.  He knows my hurts; those things…however small…that cause me pain.  Things that aren’t life or death…but just trigger me to feel discouraged and “less”.

I’ve been thinking since that night, how easy it would have been to just chalk this evening up to luck or coincidence…but I’m so thankful that God impressed on me that this was His way of blessing me.  And do you know what?  I presume there are blessings all around you too.  During those times when life gets you down and you are feeling discouraged…take notice of everything around you.  I’m guessing that God is working overtime at those moments to make sure you know that He sees you…He loves you…and wants to encourage you.

And who knows…maybe you don’t need encouragement but someone you encounter does.  Maybe they need you to do something special for them so they know that not only you care…but God does too.  So, let’s be on the lookout today because I’m guessing there are people all around us who are wondering if anyone really “sees” them.  Let’s make sure they know that we do…and so does our Heavenly Father.

So encourage each other

and build each other up,

just as you are already doing.

Monday Morning Memo: Public Service Announcement

Dan and I just returned from working at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center in Boone, North Carolina.   This is a trip we look forward to each year and it always seems like the hours just fly by and before we know it…we are heading back home.

Many of you always make a point to fill boxes for this worthy cause.  But I was thinking there might be some of you who aren’t familiar with what happens to your box after you drop it off at a collection center.  You may be under the assumption that your box goes directly to the blessed child after leaving the collection center…but that is not the case.  So, I thought I would use my blog post today as a Public Service Announcement to fill you in on some of the details.

After the boxes are dropped off at the collection location in your area, they are then secured with rubber bands and packed in larger cartons so they can be taken to one of the eight processing centers across the country…like the one we worked at in Boone.  The cartons are then unloaded from the semi-trucks and placed at the end of each processing line.  This is the area where we work each day.

The first person on the line is the pre-inspector (this is usually my job).  I take a shoebox from a large carton, remove the rubber bands and place them inside the box (they say the recipients love getting these bands!).  My job is to make sure the top of the box has a label on it with the information marked as to whether the box is for a boy or girl and the age group for which it was packed.  I then open the box and look for any money that may be inside.  They ask that you give $10.00 for each shoebox you pack to help defray the shipping costs and so my job is to remove that money and drop it into a safe box.  This is why it is so helpful if you put the money on top of all the contents of the box so it can be easily seen.  Some choose to pay the shipping money online, so not every box will have money…but it’s my responsibility to search the contents for any checks or cash.  Not only is it important to find the money to help with shipping…but we are told that if cash is left in the box…the child receiving the box could be in danger if it is made known they had been given money.

I then pass this box on to one of the “inspectors” (usually two on each side of the line).  Their job is to go through everything in the box to make sure there is nothing inappropriate.  What I mean by this is that there are various items that are not allowed in the countries where these boxes are sent…so they need to be removed before shipping.  There are also items which are not allowed because they could break during shipping and cause damage to the other contents.

Examples of inappropriate items are shampoo, body wash, snow globes, juice boxes, lotions, bubbles, toothpaste etc.  Food items are not allowed because it sometimes takes 4-6 months for a box to reach its location and these foods wouldn’t be fresh after that length of time.  One year we had a box which contained homemade cookies…which was a nice thought…but they would have been rather nasty by the time the child received them!  We are also instructed to remove used or damaged items, war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures, medications, vitamins or aerosol cans.  Whatever is taken out of the box is not thrown away…but is given to children in need inside the United States who can receive it more quickly.

The inspector then has “filler” items in front of them which they can add to the box to replace the things that needed to be removed.  This ensures that each child receives a well-filled box at the time of distribution.

Once the box is adequately filled, it is then given to the “taper”.  This person runs tape completely around the box to ensure that the lid stays closed and no items are lost.

The box is then handed to one of the “packers”.  These workers (usually three or four of them) check to see if there is a “Follow Your Shoebox” label on the box.  If there is, then the barcode on the label is scanned along with the code on the larger shipping box.  This information is then sent to the person who originally packed the shoebox so they know exactly where their box was distributed.

The packers then place the shoeboxes in the larger shipping box according to whether they are for a boy or a girl and by the age for which they are designated.  The packers’ job is sometimes like putting a puzzle together, since there are various sizes of boxes and tubs used.  They need to be good at figuring out how to get all the mismatched boxes in the shipping box without lost space.

Once the shipping box is full, the packer places the large carton on a conveyor belt, which moves the box to the end of the line.  At that location the box is taped closed and loaded in a semi-truck to begin its journey to its final location.

The goal this year at the Boone processing center is to process 780,000 shoeboxes….and that is just for one center!  It is an amazing experience to be a part of such a worthy cause.

Do these boxes have an impact on the recipients?  There is a man who, at the age of seven, was in an orphanage with 250 children in Rwanda.  He said excitement was high when they received their boxes…because this was the first gift any of them had EVER received!  Can you imagine?  As a result of being given this box, along with the fact that He was introduced to Jesus through this event, he asked Jesus into his heart.

I remember hearing from a regional director for East Africa who told of one of his trips to deliver the boxes.  He talked to a young boy, Frankie, and asked him what he hoped to get in his box.  Frankie answered that he wanted a blue shirt with buttons down the front.  The director started to tell him that he was doubtful he would get a shirt like that in his box, but before the words came out of his mouth, he felt the Lord telling him to be quiet and not squelch the boy’s enthusiasm.

Sometime later, the director saw Frankie and asked him what was in his box.  With his face beaming, he showed the man the blue shirt with buttons down the front which he had received.  He was so excited and said he wanted the shirt to wear to church on Sunday.  Later, after returning to the states, the director was telling this story and a woman’s face lit up.  She said she had been in Walmart and found 10 blue, buttoned down shirts for $1.00 a piece, so she had bought them all and put one in each of her boxes.  Coincidence?  I think not!

In another instance there were two brothers, but because there weren’t enough boxes to give to everyone, only one of the brothers received a box.  But when the one boy opened his box, there were two of everything inside.  Once again, the Lord had provided.

When you hear of children who are thrilled to finally have their very own toothbrush, instead of having to share one toothbrush between many children…children who are thrilled to finally have a bowl to put soup in – instead of having to cup their hands to hold the hot broth…children who receive a shoebox as their first present ever and as a result, ask Jesus into their heart…it makes time spent filling shoeboxes as time well spent.

If you have never filled a shoebox, I urge you to do it next year.  In fact, you can still fill a shoebox online for this year at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/buildonline/.  For $25.00 (which includes shipping) you can “build” a shoebox which will be sent to a child to make sure they know that Jesus loves them.  It’s a small price to pay to have a huge impact on eternity!

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.  For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.  I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?  When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”

Monday Morning Memo: The Most Needed Gift

Well, we’ve turned the page on the calendar and December is upon us.  It’s so hard to believe it will soon be Christmas!  This fall has just sped by and now we begin a month which will surely go by even faster.

We often think of this time of year being filled with gift buying, gift giving, parties and the making of wonderful memories.  While this may be true for many, I think we need to remember that it isn’t true for all.  For some, this time of year only reminds them of what they don’t have, can’t give or the parties to which they won’t be invited.  Their days can be depressing, and they can feel inferior to those whose Facebook posts tell a tale of Christmas perfection.

I just feel led today to make sure that everyone reading this knows that your worth is not related to how much money you have…how many gifts you buy or receive…or how many gatherings to which you are invited.  Your heavenly Father determines your worth and He created you in His image!  Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created human beings in his own image.  In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”  How amazing is that!  You and I were created to look like Him and as the saying goes, God doesn’t make no junk!

Before you were created, God created everything else we see in our universe.  The majestic mountains, the beautiful oceans, the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, the flowers…even the animals…but He knew that the world was not complete without you.  He made you to be a “one-in-a-million” kind of person and He loves you more than you can imagine.

Did you know that Jesus died for you, knowing that you might never love Him back?  That is true love.   His love is not based on how much wealth you have or how popular you are or on how many gifts you have under your Christmas tree.  There is nothing that you have done which can diminish His love for you.  He loves you for who you are right now, at this very moment.

If you are struggling this year with all the festivities going on around you, don’t ever forget how much you are loved.  Don’t ever weigh your worth based on what others say or think of you because your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.  Also, your worth will never be based on what you have done, but on what He, Jesus Christ, has done for you.  Remember, He loved you enough to die for you, so don’t ever let anyone else tell you otherwise.

If this is a joyful time for you, make sure and be on the lookout for those who may need to know that someone cares about them this season.  It could be an overworked cashier, a mother trying to shop with young children, a co-worker whose family lives miles away or it could even be that person sitting next to you in the pew at church.  Your smile may be just what they need to get through their day and have a more positive feeling this Christmas.  So, reach out and let someone know what his or her worth is in Christ.  It just might be their most needed gift this Christmas!

Monday Morning Memo: What is Your Worth?

My husband and I enjoy checking out secondhand stores and antique stores when we travel.  One thing we have observed over the years, is that the items have changed.  When we first began looking, the antiques were pieces which our grandparents used to use.  Somewhere down the line, the items were from our parents’ era and now we have realized, we are looking at things WE used to own!  If you want to feel like an antique yourself, just start checking out these types of stores.

The funny part of it is that neither of us knows much of anything about antiques.  When we look at a priced item, we have no idea whether it is a bargain or overpriced.  We just go strictly on its appearance and whether we like it.  One thing we do know is with most of the precious relics that we see, the older the item the more valuable it is.  In other words, as each piece ages, it becomes more priceless and its worth climbs.

Also, the condition it is in affects its worth.  If it has been well taken care of throughout the years, you can expect to pay more, because its condition makes it worth it.  But each piece needs to be thoroughly checked out because what you see at first may be misleading until all its parts are inspected.

I’ve been thinking about how much my walk with Christ should be like an antique.  As I age, I should become more and more valuable.  Now, before you think I am sounding arrogant, let me explain.  I don’t think I should become more valuable for me…but for Christ.  On my own, I am worth nothing, unless I look more like Him as I get older.  I should be doing more and more for Him, serving Him to the fullest every day.  When others see me, they should be able to “inspect” my life and see that I am genuine in every way and not just an imposter attempting to look like a follower of Christ.

One thing we need to remember though is that just getting older doesn’t mean we will automatically have more value.  I have met people who have had the attitude that just because they are older, they somehow, I guess through osmosis, have become a stronger disciple.  They haven’t spent time in the Bible or listened to Christ’s direction, they have just relied on the fact that they have walked this earth longer than others.  I think it is such a shame that they are so misinformed.  They are missing out on a life which could be worth so much more and have a much greater impact on eternity.

So, my question today is…what is your worth?  As each day goes by, are you becoming more valuable or are you just becoming a better imposter?  Is your life having an impact on eternity or are your age spots all you have to show for your additional candles on your birthday cake?  It is a given that as long as we are breathing, each of us will age so we might as well make sure we are taking really good care of the life Christ has given us.  He already paid a very dear price for this antique body of ours, by dying on a cross so we could live with Him forever.  Let’s make sure our life is an antique whose worth grows as we strive to make an impact on eternity.  That will only occur as we share with others the Good News of the wonderful grace of our God!

“But my life is worth nothing to me

unless I use it for finishing the work

assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work

of telling others the Good News

about the wonderful grace of God.”

Monday Morning Memo: A Heavenly Delight :-)

I thought at first it was a SPAM email since it told me I had been chosen as one of the anniversary cookbook giveaway recipients.  It then said that I just needed to provide them with my address, and they would send my free cookbook right out to me.  I didn’t remember entering this giveaway per se…but I usually do things like this when the entry doesn’t require me to do anything but give my first name and email.

So, I did a little investigating and found out that the person sending the email did actually work for the person whose recipes were in this book…so I decided it was legit.  I sent back my address and within 24 hours the beautiful, hardcover cookbook was at my door!

Anyone who knows me well, knows this made me happy.  I love to cook and enjoy finding new recipes.  Of course, most recipes are found on the internet anymore and I like the ones that have already received rave reviews from other cooks.  I take the time to read their thoughts on whether the recipe should be made just as written, or whether they thought it was better with their own personal “tweaking”.

It never ceases to surprise me though, when I make one of these tried and true concoctions, and we hate it.  Sometimes hundreds of other cooks say that this combination of ingredients is the best thing since sliced bread, and we can hardly swallow it.  I have to chuckle when my husband always says the same line when he doesn’t like my new dish: “You don’t ever have to make this again.”  That’s my cue that this particular recipe needs to be destroyed!

Does this failure stop me from trying new recipes?  Absolutely not.   Do I give up and tell myself that I guess I wasn’t meant to be a cook and should resort to eating and serving TV dinners?  Of course not!  Just because this new dish wasn’t a success, doesn’t mean my next attempt won’t be a heavenly delight

Just like I wouldn’t give up cooking because of a failed attempt, I shouldn’t give up easily in other areas of my life when I fall short.  Unfortunately, I see it happening too often in the lives of those with whom I come in contact.  They try for a new job and don’t get it, and they feel like a failure and give up.  They discipline their child and the end result is not what they were expecting, so they throw their hands up and let their son or daughter do whatever he or she wants.  They step out of their comfort zone to attempt something new for Christ and their actions are not met with rave reviews, so they resort to just being a “pew warmer”.

None of us like to fail at anything.  But our failures shouldn’t define us as a person.  We need to remember that it isn’t the failure that will destroy us but our attitude towards the failure.  I like this quote from Chuck Swindoll, “We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.”

There is so much truth in his words.  Our attitude is key when we come up against a failure or life throws us a curveball.  Will we beat ourselves up or will we stand back up, dust ourselves off and resolve to try again?  Remember that Matthew 19:26 tells us, “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  Do you believe that today?  If so…make sure your focus stays on Him as you endeavor new and challenging opportunities that will help you grow to look more like Christ.  You just never know when one of these ventures will turn out to be a heavenly delight!

Oh, and you might want to say a prayer for my husband…because with a new cookbook in the house…he’s bound to be served lots of new concoctions!

Monday Morning Memo: Love Languages

I had another devotional written to share today…but then God told me to write these thoughts instead.  Many times I have no idea why He changes what I share at the last minute…I just know I need to listen to His gentle promptings and let Him handle the rest.

I’m sharing several pictures with you today.  One of them is a picture of my five-year-old grandson, Ezra (behind the plant!).  The rest of the pictures are just a sampling of what he has given us throughout the last year.  Every time he comes to our home…or we go to his…or even see him someplace else…he has something to give us that he has made.  Just last week, we were at his brothers’ basketball games…and as soon as he saw me, he said, “I made something for you Grandma…but I forgot it at home.”  He didn’t know at the time that his mom had slipped his drawing into her purse.  So, minutes later, smiling from ear to ear…he handed me an envelope with his precious artwork inside.

The day he gave me the paper folded to look like a dog, he also gave one to my husband.  In fact, I found out he had made many of them.  It had been his week at preschool to show his class something from home…and Ezra chose to take a bag full of these folded papers so each classmate could choose one to keep.

This summer when he attended Vacation Bible School at his church, I happened to see him on two of the days as he came out from his class.  I could just see the wheels turning in his head…as he contemplated which craft he would give me that he had made that day.  Then, a smile would fill his face and he’d reach into his bag of goodies and hand me one of them.  Be. Still. My. Heart.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet…Ezra’s love language is giving.  He is always looking for ways to bless people with something he has created.  It just thrills me to see him, at such a young age, want to let others know of his love for them.  In a time when most people are trying to figure out how they can get more…he is trying to figure out how he can give more.

Oh, what lessons we can learn from this precious boy.  I know he sure has made me do some contemplating on my life.  How do I view others?  Do I look at them, wondering what they can give me…or do for me?  Am I jealous over what they have…or am I always wanting to make sure I have better possessions to show-off to them? Do I go out of my way to make sure that those I encounter know that I care about them and love them?  Do I bless them by demonstrating that I have been thinking about them when we’ve been apart?

I want to be more like Ezra.  I realize that each of us have different “love languages”…and our way of showing our love to others may be different…but I think we need to evaluate whether we are using those qualities to truly bless others.  I hope so.  Because life is just happier when Ezra is around…and I hope the same can be said about me :-)

And do not forget to do good

and to share with others,

for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Monday Morning Memo: He Understands

If you have been reading my ramblings for any length of time, you know that I tend to be rather transparent.  Sometimes I find that easy…and sometimes it is hard.   What I am sharing with you today has been rather difficult to put into words.

Many of you know that I have had countless health issues over the years…many of them stemming from a disorder I have which is a form of Ehlers Danlos.  It has caused numerous things to go haywire in my body and if I had a dollar for every time a doctor has said to me, “Well, this isn’t normal”…I would be a very wealthy woman.  As a result…I deal with a lot of pain and restrictions which often determine what I can and can’t do.

I can’t tell you how often I have prayed for God to heal me.  I’ve bartered with Him, begged Him, and even reminded Him that I could serve Him much more effectively if I had a miraculous story of healing to share with others.  I also can’t tell you the number of times others have laid hands on me, anointed me, and prayed for my healing.  Just recently, dear friends called one evening to see if I was home…and said they were on their way to pray for my current health “detour”.  They asked God to, once again, heal me completely.  I can’t tell you how humbling that was for me…to have them take time out of their busy schedules to approach God’s Throne on my behalf.

While all these experiences have blessed me tremendously, I have not been healed.  If I am honest, I don’t think I will be healed on this side of heaven.  Does that mean I don’t have enough faith for God to heal me?  No, I don’t think so.  I have felt God impressing on me recently that for some reason, I can better serve Him with my health issues…than without.

I don’t tell you all of this today to sound “spiritual”…because even though I may be able to serve God more effectively with my limitations…I don’t always handle that truth well.  It is easy for me to become discouraged and feel like a burden to my husband, my family, and my friends.  My restrictions often cause them to have to do things for me or cause us to have to change plans because of my pain.  That isn’t what I want, so to accept the fact that my situation will probably only get worse and not better…doesn’t always make me display the joy of the Lord.

I’m also not sharing this today for you to feel sorry for me.  There are many people who are going through much worse circumstances than me…but that doesn’t negate my feelings nor should it for you either.  Just because someone else may have it worse than you…your feelings still matter and so I want you to know that I understand your struggle and care about your difficulties.

But, how thankful I am to serve a Savior who also understands.  Even though I have times of discouragement…He doesn’t love me any less.  Even though I often take two steps forward and then one step backwards in my walk with Him…He never leaves my side.  And even though it isn’t my choice to deal with my limitations…I am confident that His plans for me are still much greater than anything I could ever imagine.  Philippians 1:6 tells me, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”  Until God calls me home, He has a mighty work to do in me and I know that His desire is for me to allow Him to do whatever it takes, to make me look more like Him.  And trust me…He has His work cut out to accomplish that!

Are you facing things in your life which are out of your control?  Are you struggling with discouragement and maybe even feeling like a burden to those around you?  I understand…but more importantly…there is One who understands and in Him you can put your trust and faith.  God’s plan for you may not make much sense at this time…but it is perfect…and if it allows you to look more like Him, it will make it all worthwhile.

Monday Morning Memo: He Told Her?

There were three ministers who went to a pastor’s convention and were all sharing one room. The first pastor said, "Let's confess our secret sins one to another. I'll start.  My secret sin is I don’t take time to pray for my churchmembers but my members think I am a prayer warrior.”

The second pastor said, "My secret sin is that I just hate working andpreparing the sermons. I copy all my sermons from those given by otherpastors."

The third pastor said, "My secret sin is gossiping and, oh boy, I can't wait to get out of this room!"

We laugh at that, but if we are honest, we probably all have had secret sins in our life.  Sins that may haunt us…sins that may still control us…even sins that we have asked for forgiveness from, but still have an impact on our daily lives.

You are probably familiar with John 4:1-42 which tells the story of the Samaritan woman.  This is a fascinating encounter to me.  Here was a woman with a very sordid past and her sins weren’tsecret.  Everyone in her community knew her to be promiscuous and I’m sure the tongues of the townspeople were kept pretty busy talking about this sinner.  She definitely wouldn’t have been one of the “in” crowd with the other women because more than likely, she may have slept with some of their husbands.  She would have been an outcast.

So why in the world would Jesus choose to speak to this despised woman at the well?  If you read this text, you will see that He planned this encounter. Jesus chose this time and this place and this woman to be a part of a setting where He would, for the first time ever, formally and explicitly unveil His true identity as the Messiah.  I would have thought He would have done that for the first time before a large crowd, like a Billy Graham crusade, to have a much greater impact.  Instead, He selected this sinful, promiscuous woman to be the first to hear it.  To me, that is amazing.

He told her…because He knew of her past.  He told her…because He knew she needed a Messiah.  He told her…because He knew she would tell others.  Because of her willingness to tell others about the Messiah, because of her willingness to be vulnerable and confess to others about her sinful past, many came to know Him as their Lord and Savior.  Jesus knew that this area was on the verge of accepting this living water that He was offering.  That’s why He told his disciples that the field was ready for harvest there in Samaria.  And because of one woman, being willing to spread the word, many were saved.  Notice that these people told the woman that they no longer were just taking her word for it that Jesus was the Messiah.  They had heard it for themselves and now believed.  You see, too often we think we must do the saving.  We don’t!  We just have to be willing to tell those whom we see about our Jesus, about what He has done for us, and the Holy Spirit will make sure they see it for themselves.

You know, this woman could have wallowed in her sin, feeling like she wasn’t worthy of accepting the living water.  Obviously, she wasn’t proud of what she had done and the sins she had committed, and she could have continued on in this sinful life, feeling like she could never be forgiven for all she had done.  I think it is easy for some of us to do that too.  We’ve done things in our past which we are not proud of, and even though we know that Jesus says He will forgive us of those sins, we continue to hold on to them, feeling shame and embarrassment.  That is Satan making sure we don’t live a victorious life in Christ.  He wants to keep us down and discouraged.

What an impact this despised, sinful, outcast woman ended up having on eternity!  If she could be used to make a difference, don’t you think you and I can be too?  Jesus can take us, with all our failures, with all our sins – secret and not so secret – cleanse us and allow us to be a living vessel for Him.  What an honor and what a privilege.  Now is the time to quit wallowing in our past and feeling that there isn’t any hope.  There IS hope in our Messiah!

Monday Morning Memo: Completely Obedient

The book had me hooked in the first chapter because it was about a Bible story which I love.  If you ask me who my favorite person in the Bible is, there is a good chance I would say Abraham because the story of him, and his son Isaac, just blows me away.

The book I have started reading this past week is, “The God of the Way”,  by Rabbi Jason Sobel, a Jewish follower of Jesus.  He is wonderful at giving great insight into the lives of those from Biblical days.  It’s not surprising then that he began the book by looking at Abraham.  What an amazing man he was.  I’ve always been in awe of his dedication and obedience to God…and Rabbi Sobel’s writings gave me even more of which to be impressed.  Did you know that God tested Abraham ten times through his life and each time, Abraham chose to trust and obey.  Every time, his faith didn’t waver because he trusted and rested in God’s faithfulness and timing.

Even when God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac…his resolve to be obedient held strong.  It has always amazed me that scripture tells us that after he was given these instructions…it was the next morning when Abraham set out with Isaac to fulfill God’s directives. He didn’t whine or complain or try to barter with God for a different outcome.  God spoke and Abraham obeyed.

But Rabbi Sobel shared another aspect of this story that I hadn’t considered.  He said that according to another highly respected Jewish scholar, Rabbi Kook, scripture alludes to the fact that Abraham “awoke” and rose up the next morning.  He said that evidently, Abraham slept soundly the night before he was to sacrifice Isaac.  He didn’t spend the wee hours pacing back and forth trying to bargain with God.  Knowing that he was called to sacrifice his son didn’t disturb his sleep.  It was this kind of calmness in faith which set Abraham apart from others.  Amazing.

And then there was Isaac.  He also had to be an obedient follower by what we read and learn from scripture.  Many of us think of Isaac as being a young boy at this time…but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Sobel shared that according to Jewish tradition, Isaac was a man in his thirties and could have easily resisted his father who was well into his second century of life by then.  Instead, Isaac had the faith to trust both his earthly father and his heavenly Father.  Doubly amazing.

Oh, how I want to have faith like Abraham and Isaac.  I want their kind of obedience…one that hears God speak and then immediately obeys, even when I have no idea where it will lead me. While I believe I’ve grown in this area over the years, I know I still have a long way to go to be like these patriarchs of the Bible.

It comes down to the fact that we all have a choice to make.  As Rabbi Sobel shared, we can choose to follow God like Abraham did, to trust Him completely, believing His promises, or we can turn back.  God won’t make us obey…it is our decision as to whether or not we will be faithful followers. Even amid unthinkable trials, we can still choose to be people of incredible faith and obedience, led by God the Father as Abraham was.

I can hardly wait to see what I learn as I read the rest of this book.  If I use my highlighter as much in the other chapters as I have so far…I just may need another highlighter.  I’m praying that my eyes will be opened and my heart will be softened as the Holy Spirit continues to speak to my soul :-)

Monday Morning Memo: If Only

Unless you’ve had your head in the sand, you know that it has been another week of horrific events in our world. Just about every TV and radio station gave us a moment-by-moment account of the bombings and the after effects. Time after time, I heard the newscaster say before running one of the stories, “And we just want to warn you, these images are difficult to see”.

It is not possible for me to think the way some people think. I just don’t have it in me. I cannot fathom how someone can deliberately make the choice to injure, kill, torture and forever change the lives of many. There is no explanation, no commentary, and no psychological evaluation that can get me to understand those thought patterns. A person whose mind is so bent for evil makes decisions which most of us just can’t grasp.

If only someone could have intervened. If only someone could have said something to those with such malicious hearts that would have changed their minds and their plans. If only their parents would have raised them differently. If only their teachers would have spent more time teaching them one on one. If only....

We can spend hour after hour listing the “If only” scenarios, but it doesn’t change what has happened in the past. We can’t go back. Yesterday has already been recorded in the record books and nothing we can do can change the history that has been made.

Today, this 24-hour period, is the only segment of time in which we can do something to make a difference. But unfortunately, the only part of today which we have jurisdiction over is ourselves. We can change no one else. We cannot make anyone think the way we think, or behave the way we think they should behave, or make decisions which we think should be made. We only have the ability to change ourselves.

That stinks, doesn’t it? It is so much easier to spend our time wishing everyone else would change. The world would be a much better place if THEY would just get their act together. I mean, I have reasons for why I behave the way I do...if only you knew what I have been through...you would surely understand.

The sobering thought is that others’ lives may never change if they don’t see a change in us. If we aren’t living lives which are completely sold out to Christ; lives which are filled with His Spirit and controlled by His touch, they may never know that we have the answer to their pain and hurt.

In light of the events of this past week, I think there is only one “If only” we should be thinking about. If only they could have met our Jesus and realized the sacrifice which has already been made for them. So true. But THEY may never meet our Jesus, if they don’t see Him in US.

No matter how each incident is labeled or described, it comes down to the fact that we have a world who needs Jesus. The question is, “Are we willing to be Jesus with skin on today, so that others will have hope for their tomorrow?” Just think...If only you and I would change...they could see Jesus!

“For he is our God.
We are the people he watches over,

the flock under his care.
If only you would listen to his voice today!”

Psalm 95:7 (NLT)
